AI Adoption Case Study: learn how Luminance's legal team reduced time spent on contract review with AI

This case study looks at how Luminance's implementation of its own AI expedited contract review and managed growing workloads.

techUK’s AI adoption collection of case studies showcases examples of how organisations are Putting AI into Action, either through the adoption of AI models within their organisations, or by developing AI tools that can be leveraged by others.

By shining a light on these use cases, techUK hopes to demonstrate examples of best practice from across sectors and from organisations of all sizes.

1. Challenge:

Luminance, a rapidly growing global organization, faced significant challenges in managing and reviewing a high volume of contracts daily. The lean legal team had to deal with over 50 contracts each day, ranging from sales and marketing agreements to lease and recruitment contracts. Manual processes were not only time-consuming but also risked creating bottlenecks and inconsistencies, preventing the legal team from focusing on more strategic tasks.

2. Solution

Luminance’s legal team has full access to the company’s own Legal-Grade™ AI which is used by some of the largest companies around the world including AMD, Hitachi and LG Chem. Designed by world-leading AI experts and validated by top-tier lawyers, this specialized legal co-pilot integrates next-generation AI at every touchpoint with business documents—from contract generation to negotiation and post-execution analysis. With its AI-Powered Traffic Light Analysis, the system expedites contract review by instantly highlighting non-compliant clauses and offering alternative acceptable wording, which can be inserted with a single click. The AI-powered repository and advanced search functionalities further streamline tasks such as managing renewals, avoiding legal risks, and creating reports. Additionally, the Legal-Grade™ AI chatbot, Ask Lumi, enables the legal team to obtain immediate answers to specific questions, redraft clauses, and generate middle-ground wording between counterparties in seconds.

3. Barriers

There was a need to train the legal team and other departments on Luminance, which was addressed through custom training sessions designed to make users comfortable with the AI’s functionalities. These training were also offered to non-legal users.

4. Impact:

Post-implementation, the results were transformative. Luminance's legal team reduced the time spent on contract review by over 60%, keeping over 90% of the work in-house despite the high volume. Luminance’s AI-powered repository and search capabilities allowed the team to perform tasks such as extracting key data for reports in minutes instead of hours. Company-wide, the AI empowered non-legal teams to generate contracts from pre-approved templates, alleviating routine work from the legal team and promoting efficiency across departments. The Legal Helpdesk function facilitated faster collaboration and communication with the legal team, bringing the average response time for legal queries down to under an hour. By streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency, Luminance’s AI has dramatically improved operational workflows and positioned the company as a leader in leveraging technology for legal operations.
