Event Round-up: Cyber Security in Higher Education
On 3 November, techUK hosted a special webinar to explore cyber security in the Higher Education sector, to share knowledge and best practice on the security challenges faced; and to look at how industry can help to ensure the UK education sector is resilient against cyber threats by helping establishments to improve their cyber security and their response to cyber incidents.
Over recent months there’s been a marked increase in ransomware attacks against education establishments, and several cyberattacks on higher education institutions have been the work of well-funded and persistent attackers. The sophisticated nature of attacks – particularly those after valuable research – means that universities and colleges must protect themselves with high levels of cyber hygiene and protection.
During this event, we took a closer look at some recent examples of cyber-attacks, data breaches and user misconfigurations; as well as how to prevent ransomware, manage risks in internationalisation and implement a Zero Trust model in Higher Education institutions.

The webinar also offered attendees the chance to ask the panel questions and we touched on issues such as the efforts being made to share threat intelligence within the higher education community; how far along universities are at viewing cyber security as a strategic aspect of their enterprise; and how universities in other countries a are they dealing with compliance pressure.

Jill leads the techUK Cyber Security programme, having originally joined techUK in October 2020 as a Programme Manager for the Cyber and Central Government programmes. She is responsible for managing techUK's work across the cyber security ecosystem, bringing industry together with key stakeholders across the public and private sectors. Jill also provides the industry secretariat for the Cyber Growth Partnership, the industry and government conduit for supporting the growth of the sector. A key focus of her work is to strengthen the public–private partnership across cyber to support further development of UK cyber security and resilience policy.
Before joining techUK, Jill worked as a Senior Caseworker for an MP, advocating for local communities, businesses and individuals, so she is particularly committed to techUK’s vision of harnessing the power of technology to improve people’s lives. Jill is also an experienced editorial professional and has delivered copyediting and writing services for public-body and SME clients as well as publishers.
