Gamma: How the tech sector is helping the government to create lasting value in public services, through both direct projects and social value? #techUKDigitalPS
The UK tech sector has been playing an increasingly critical role in delivering public services more efficiently and effectively. However, it is important to ensure that these efforts are guided by ethics and a sense of responsibility: we should all be doing things the right way, always. The tech industry is, after all, building the hybrid revolution at every level of our society. Everywhere, we have the opportunity to empower people to transform business for good.
To ensure the UK tech sector is making a difference in public services, there are many specific examples of how technology is being used in healthcare and smart cities. According to data from Tussell, the NHS awarded over £6 billion in contracts to tech suppliers in 2020, showing the significant impact that tech is having in the healthcare industry. Similarly, YouGov research found that 86% of the UK public supports investing in smart city technology, with the government already investing over £40m in smart city projects.
In addition to this, many tech companies are investing in programs that provide digital skills training to underprivileged communities. This is an essential aspect of social value, as digital skills are becoming increasingly important in today's job market. According to YouGov research, 68% of people believe that tech companies have a responsibility to provide training and education to the communities they operate in. The tech industry should guide these efforts to create a more equitable and efficient society. At Gamma, we are certainly committed to providing digital skills training to people from all backgrounds. We strongly believe that everyone deserves access to the tools they need to succeed in the digital economy. That's why we're investing in initiatives that provide training and support to those who need it most.
Moreover, in a world of increasing complexity, it's important to lean into simplicity and help people to feel connected. The tech sector can play a vital role in this by developing technologies that are intuitive and user-friendly. By doing so, we can ensure that everyone has access to the tools they need to succeed in a digital world.
Here in the UK, technology has the potential to make a significant difference in public services, including:
-
Data Analytics: To help identify areas for improving public service delivery.
-
Automation: Improving efficiency and reducing manual tasks.
-
Collaboration: Unified Communications are enabling teams to be much more efficient and effective.
-
Citizen Engagement: Digital channels for accessing public services are widely available.
-
Security and Privacy: Protection of data, implementing robust measures.
All of this, however, must be conducted in a way that prioritises ethics, responsibility, and social value. By collaborating with government agencies and investing in social value initiatives, tech companies can help create a more equitable and efficient society.
It is heartening to see the UK tech sector taking an active role in delivering public services that benefit everyone. With continued collaboration and investment, we can build a better future for everyone.
