NCSC publishes Annual Review 2024
That’s one of the key messages from the NCSC’s eighth annual review which provides an overview of the key developments and highlights of the UK’s cyber security landscape from September 2023 to August 2024.
The report has found that the NCSC informed 542 organisations of cyber incidents affecting them, more than doubling the 258 reported last year. Of these incidents 89 were nationally significant and 12 were classified as severe, representing a threefold increase in high-impact incidents compared to last year.
This year’s review has highlighted the challenges facing the UK’s cyber resilience, with an increase in the number of cyber threats. The NCSC note that not enough organisation are using their guidelines or implementing their frameworks.
The report covers a number of key areas:
- The NCSC continues to take steps to protect the UK from hostile states and cyber criminals. This year’s report highlights the growing threat caused by cyber criminals exploiting AI to meet their malicious goals, emphasising the urgent need for organisations to bolster their cyber resilience to protect against these new emerging threats.
- To address the increasing volume of cyber threats, the NCSC has been proactive in improving the UK’s cyber defences. This includes safeguarding democratic processes, such as defending the UK’s democracy during the general election and defending the nation’s overall cyber resilience.
- In addition to direct protection efforts, the NCSC has played a pivotal role in strengthening the wider cyber-ecosystem. It conducted its first review of the CyberFirst programme to evaluate its broader social value, hosted the inaugural CyberFirst Hackathon, and continued to implement various initiatives aimed at supporting individuals aspiring to join the cyber sector and enhance their skills.
- The NCSC also collaborates with the technology sector to tackle emerging threats using diverse security-testing methodologies. These include principles-based assurance, Individual Cyber Defence, and a vulnerability reporting service. This year the NCSC has dedicated a section of the report to explain how it will help organisations to plan their migration to post-quantum cryptography.
