Procurement Policy Note: Improving Transparency of AI use in Procurement
In March 2024, the Cabinet Office release the Procurement Policy Note: Improving Transparency of AI use in Procurement, which addressed the rapid development of AI systems and tools that are increasingly being used in Government commercial activities.
Whilst such tools are significantly beneficial to users, the PPN gives guidelines on how Central Government Departments should appropriately adopt the technology, managing the risks it can also pose. As with its abilities to emulate and go beyond the products of human intelligence, AI has ethical and legal implications that need to be considered, ensuring that decisions made by AI are not solely relied on.
The PPN contains information on how to accurately assess whether AI is the right solution to a procurement problem, and a guide for its use within the public sector, for those ranging for civil servants to intelligence projects.
