Profile of an apprentice
Alice is a first year Level 3 HR Administration Apprentice at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence and provides insight into her typical day and why she was draw to this scheme.
Could you provide some background on your education?
I completed and gained 11 GCSE’s A-C. I then went on to do my A-Levels, achieving A*BB in Philosophy, English Literature and Psychology. Following this, I went on study Philosophy at the University of Birmingham and achieved a 2:1.
Can you describe your typical day?
I am currently working on a range of projects within the Future Talent Team. This includes coordinating and attending careers fairs; updating the Future Talent external and internal web pages; organising assessment centres; managing our work experience programme and other education outreach activities.
What has your apprentice scheme involved so far?
So far the apprenticeship scheme has involved a 2 day induction in Guildford. I have also taken part in a 3 day personal effectiveness course in Leeds. I also attend college every Monday to study toward a CIPD.
How has BAE Systems supported you through the scheme?
BAE have supported me so far by allowing me the time and resource to attend college and work on my assignments. They have also provided me with a multitude of training and development opportunities within my role.
What big projects have you worked on?
- Work Experience 2020 Programme
- Assessment Centres
And what did you enjoy most about those project?
I have enjoyed many aspects of these projects, but mainly I feel that the work I am doing is meaningful and makes a positive impact on the organisation. I also particularly enjoy working on the education outreach activities and encouraging young people to study and pursue a career in STEM.

Do you do any extracurricular work with BAE Systems, such as school outreach programmes or STEM promotion?
As this is part of my role, I am fortunate to take part in many outreach programmes and STEM promotion activities.
Do you do any extracurricular activities outside of work?
I am currently not part of any clubs but I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
What drew you to BAE Systems and your apprenticeship scheme?
I was drawn to the apprenticeship scheme because I felt it was the perfect opportunity to study toward a CIPD whilst gaining relevant and hands on experience.
How big a team do you work in?
3 people.
Where do you hope your career will go in future?
For the foreseeable future, I hope to complete the apprenticeship programme, gain more valuable experience and the CIPD.
