Workspace Technology is the second of March's SME Member of the Week. This month, techUK focusing on Women in Tech. Throughout March we are showcasing how SME members are supporting this women in tech and supporting gender diversity within the tech industry.

How did your company start?
Workspace Technology Ltd was founded in 2002 by Technical Director Roy Griffiths. He had a vision to provide innovative and cost-effective IT solutions to businesses. The company has since grown to become a leading provider of Data Centre solutions that house mission-critical data, services and applications. We have recently expanded and opened a factory in Sutton Coldfield where we manufacture prefabricated Data Centres, Data Cubes, Power Cubes, Telco Cubes, Secure Cubes and modular solutions. .
How does your company contribute to this month's theme?
We have a number of women including myself that work at Workspace Technology Ltd and they all contribute vital elements to the success of the business. Service Management, Technical Design, Marketing, Accounting, Sales to mention just a few of the roles occupided by women. Women bring a unique set of skills and talents to the table. From strong organizational and problem-solving skills to the ability to think critically and strategically, female employees are well-equipped to tackle the challenges that the Tech industry requires.
Who's behind your company?
I am lucky to work for a company that supports the growth and development of Women and encourages collaboration. We have to be agile, innovative, analytical, and think critically, strategically and through the collaboration of all team members we design and deliver highly efficient cutting edge data centres that are robust, cost effective, sustainable, scalable and most importantly are fit for purpose now and in the future. Its a corny phrase but Team Work really does make the dream work!.
What’s your perspective on the present and the future of this month's theme?
According to “Women in Tech” more companies are addressing the gender gap in technology, although women still only account for around 26% of people working in IT. However, the sector is changing women are also increasingly taking on leadership roles three out of four girls now express an interest in computer science.
You only need to look at some of the most influential women in tech right now holding some of the top positions in the industry.

- Susan Wojcicki – CEO of YouTube
- Ginni Rometty – CEO of IBM
- Marissa Mayer – CEO of Yahoo
- Angela Ahrendts – Senior Vice President of Apple Retail
- Clare Gilmartin – CEO, Trainline
By seeing more female role models in tech, young girls will start to see IT as a realistic and attractive career option. Data Centres are rapidly changing environments, they need to be agile and responsive to changing customer needs and demands. So, it’s no surprise that the number of women working in them is growing as well. Whilst traditionally data centres were predominantly staffed, designed, and built by men, the workforce is becoming increasingly diverse.
Stem support for women in tech includes initiatives such as mentorship programmes, scholarships, electrical and mechanical engineering programs and other career and educational resources. These initiatives aim to provide women in tech with the necessary skills, resources, and support to help them succeed in the tech industry.

What does the future look like for your company?
We are working with a number of large Edge companies on prefabricated IT enclosures solutions and also working with Defence and Government on Secure Cubes I think both products are going to explode in the market place.
Asks for other members
The Edge Data Centre industry is changing rapidly as businesses are needing to store and process data closer to the source, reducing latency and improving performance. Edge Data Centres are also becoming more efficient and cost-effective, as they are designed to use less energy and space than traditional data centres. Additionally, Edge Data Centres are required to be more secure. Throughout March, coinciding with International Women’s Day (IWD 2023) on 8 March, we are exploring how we embrace equitable workplaces. The UN’s theme for IWD 2023 focuses on Digital for All or DigitALL, and we are proud to support this.
