Beyond the Hype: Examining the Role of AI in Health & Care
12.15pm – 12.50pm BST, 8 October 2024 ‐ 35 mins
Panel
Artificial intelligence (AI) exploded into mainstream consciousness in early 2023, with ChatGPT becoming the fastest-growing app of all time by February. In every list of industries and sectors set to be impacted most heavily by AI, healthcare makes the cut.A year on from this moment, has anything other than rhetoric really changed, and is the digital health ecosystem focussing on the right issues?
This techUK panel will unpick whether we are focussing on the right challenges and opportunities, which AI use cases present the lowest hanging fruit, and question if we should be prioritising the adoption of AI relative to foundational infrastructure, or focussing on addressing more immediate and fundamental problems first.

Breakout Session 2: Collaboration for the digital future: where next to improve the integration of health and social care?
1.50pm – 2.25pm BST, 8 October 2024 ‐ 35 mins
Breakout
Successful integration of health and care systems and services enables the possibility for citizens to receive the correct care, at the right time in an appropriate location, with results including improved outcomes, plus increased service effectiveness and efficiency. However, challenges such as a lack of joined up health and care data, plus separated governance and funding structures, persist amongst varied barriers to achieving this. Close partnership working across health and care actors and organisations can foster coordinated efforts to join up services and engender meaningful integration.During this integration-focused discussion, pannelists will consider what progress has been made to date in the integration of health and care services, consider how to optimise cross-sectoral collaboration to tackle outstanding barriers to integration, and explore what additional actions can drive further improvements to realise local and system-level integration of health and care services.

Recent Developments in the Procurement landscape: how changes will impact healthcare suppliers
3.20pm – 3.50pm BST, 8 October 2024 ‐ 30 mins
Panel
The UK healthcare sector is undergoing a significant shift in procurement practices with the arrival of the Procurement Act 2023 (the Act) and the Provider Selection Regime (PSR).The combined effects of the Act and the PSR paves the way for a more streamlined and innovation-friendly procurement landscape within the UK health sector. While the PSR focuses on clinical services, the Act introduces significant changes that will also benefit digital health tech providers.
While the overall outlook is positive, some ambiguity remains. The classification of digital contracts under the PSR requires clarification, particularly when the technology component carries a higher value.
This panel will examine the impacts of the changes, including:
- How industry can effectively demonstrate the unique value proposition of their solutions during the procurement process
- How smaller companies can compete with established players
- What kind of collaboration between the digital health industry and healthcare organisations would optimise the procurement process, ensuring successful implementation of innovative solutions?
